HubSpot Takes $32 Million Investment From Sequoia, Google Ventures And Salesforce

In January we reported that digital marketing startup HubSpot was close to taking a new venture round. That deal is now closed, and the company will announce that they've taken $32 million from Sequoia Capital, Google Ventures, Salesforce and previous investors. HubSpot, which is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has raised a total of $65 million in venture capital. The company has 4,000 customers, they say, who use HubSpot to help manage their website and generate leads. Revenue is at a $25 million run rate annually, up from $10 million a year ago, says CEO Brian Halligan.

Photos: Leica M3 and Fujifilm X100 Side-By-Side

We called the hot-and-almost-here Fujifilm X100 Leica-like, but if you didn’t believe use, take a look at these photos from Flickr user Nokton. They show the classic Leica M3 and the new Fujifilm hybrid rangefinder together, and they could have been separated at birth.
Well, not quite at birth: the M3 was born back in 1954, [...]

A Dating Site That Hooks You Up with Someone Who Looks Like You [Wtf]

Findyourfacemate.com is a new dating site (that launches sometime this month) that tries to hook up people who look alike. Seriously! It uses facial-recognition technology (from Face.com) that tracks nine points on each user's face-eyes, ears, nose, chin, and corners and center of the mouth-to find their match. The site is the brainchild of Christina Bloom, who looked like her ex-husband and has sort of become obsessed with the idea of finding 'facemates' for other people. More »

Apple finds another AirPlay partner in Pioneer's VSX-1021 AV receiver

You may have laughed off the assertion made by BridgeCo's VP of Sales and Marketing back at CES, but the man's looking downright prophetic now. Apple has just nailed down yet another major player in its efforts to take over the streaming media world with AirPlay, as Pioneer's VSX-1021 launched today as the first of eight AirPlay receivers the company has planned for 2011. It's a 7.1 channel affair that supports wireless playback of iTunes libraries so long as you fork over a few extra dollars for the AS-WL300 wireless LAN adapter. You'll also need an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or a Mac / PC with iTunes 10.1+, and the new AVR should show up immediately as an available AirPlay device. This particular one will sell for $549, and if you're looking to spring, you should also know about Air Jam and iControlAV2 -- two new (free) apps that turn iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 4.2 into sources for the aforesaid AVR. The latter actually enables full-on control of the receiver from an iOS device, while the former should do a fine job of handling the song selection during your next part. Hit up the source links for the nitty-gritty, and if you venture down beyond the break, you'll find overview videos for the device shown above as well as the Air Jam app.

Groupon launches Gaopeng.com coupon site in China

With a population of more than 1.3 billion people, getting your app launched inside China's borders could be a very good thing for business. That's what Groupon thinks, too, and its new China spin-off Gaopeng.com aims to bring local deals to connected Chinese users.

Estimates peg the number of Internet users in China at around half a billion. Groupon will be fighting for market share with other group buying services, and it has apparently partenered with Tencent -- which develops China's most popular instant messaging app QQ -- to get Gaopeng off and running.

Competitors aren't totally thrilled with Groupon's arrival, and not just because there's another deal site in China. Groupon has been accused of poaching staff -- and competitors have firmly stated that employees who leave for Grouon will not be welcomed back.

Immersion haptic feedback SDK for Android released

Immersion haptic feedback SDK for Android
Haptic feedback, which all began with the mythical introduction of the Nintendo Rumble Pak and its use in Star Fox 64 and GoldenEye, is about to get a big boost on the Android platform thanks to the release of the Immersion SDK.

Immersion Corporation, which has long provided haptic feedback technology for a variety of other applications, has only really dabbled in video games before. This SDK is targeted straight at Android game developers, and is free to download immediately -- and royalty-wise, it's free up a $50,000 threshold, too. There's a video of the Immersion development platform after the break.

As for the effects that can be achieved with haptic feedback, the only real limit is the designer's imagination. The SDK comes with a bunch of pre-defined haptic responses which developers can simply plug into their games, but there's also a tool called MOTIV Studio that lets you design your very own rumbles. Hopefully this heralds a new age of games that don't try to vibrate their way out of your hand.

'Haptic,' if you were wondering, comes from the Greek haptikos, which means 'to grasp or touch.'

GPS Chaos: How a $30 Box Can Jam Your Life [Safety]

It was just after midday in San Diego, California, when the disruption started. In the tower at the airport, air-traffic controllers peered at their monitors only to find that their system for tracking incoming planes was malfunctioning. At the Naval Medical Center, emergency pagers used for summoning doctors stopped working. Chaos threatened in the busy harbour, too, after the traffic-management system used for guiding boats failed. On the streets, people reaching for their cellphones found they had no signal and bank customers trying to withdraw cash from local ATMs were refused. Problems persisted for another 2 hours. More »

We had so many people sending us tips about the PadPivot stand today that I was beginning to suspect the designer had signed up for a multitude of alternative email addresses. Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

cueboyquest
Yes, that's right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren't always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight - the have arcing trajectories, so you don't always hit exactly where you aim.

There's another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they're large too. Simply beautiful!

10+ Chrome keyboard shortcuts that make surfing easier

Chrome logoChrome, the new kid on the block, is fast. It has a spartan UI, too, which no doubt makes it feel faster -- but at a cost! Chrome, like IE9, has all of its juicier features hidden behind two or three mouse clicks. Having a lightning-fast JavaScript engine is great, but by moving your hand to the mouse you destroy any semblance of actual efficiency.

If you really want to make the most of Chrome's speed, what you need is is a bevy of keyboard shortcuts. Check them out!
  • Alt+F or Alt+E -- Open the Wrench (Tools) menu (you can then use the arrow keys to navigate it...)
  • Ctrl+Shift+B -- Toggles the Bookmarks Bar on and off
  • Ctrl+D -- Bookmark your current Web page
  • Ctrl+Shift+D -- Bookmarks all of your open Web pages in one folder
  • Ctrl+J -- Opens the Downloads tab
  • Shift+Esc -- Opens the 'Task Manager', which you can use to close errant tabs/processes
  • Ctrl+Shift+J -- Opens the Chrome Developer Tools (which are surprisingly good!)
  • Ctrl+L -- Selects your current page's URL (and puts the cursor in the address bar)
  • Ctrl+Backspace -- Deletes one word/phrase to the left of your cursor in the address bar
  • Ctrl+G -- Finds the next instance of your search term (Ctrl+F!) Ctrl+Shift+G finds the previous instance
  • Ctrl+U -- View the source of your current page
  • Ctrl+R -- The same as F5 (might be faster for some people to type)
  • Ctrl+1(2, 3, 4, etc) -- Switch to the tab designated by the number (from the left)
  • Ctrl+Shift+T -- Re-open the most recently closed tab
Mac users, check out the list on Google's own Chrome support pages. Linux users, your shortcuts are the same as Windows!

For more software tips, see our tips index.

Google Maps Navigation Now Directs You Around Traffic [Google]

I'll gladly drive out of my way to avoid the soul-crushing agony of bumper to bumper traffic, and that's just what a new beta for the Google Maps Navigation Android app will show me how to do. From now on, the first set of directions it spits out will be the fastest in current conditions, so if everyone's gawking at some accident on the highway you'd normally be taking, Google will direct you zip away on an alternate route.
